Mistletoe, a Victorian Tradition

Victorian Tradition says that those who met under the mistletoe could claim a kiss. The number of kisses you were allowed under the plant depended on the number of berries it had. Each time a kiss was given, a berry was removed. When the berries were gone so were the kisses underneath it.

I have many memories of gathering mistletoe as a child with my grandmother. She would tie small sprigs together with red ribbon and sell them at the local markets.

Mistletoe grows in clumps or balls in trees and is used as a nest for many species of bird. This is especially true in Australia.
