How to Test for Essential Oil Allergies

Doing a skin patch test is a simple, important step that should always be done before using a new oil on your skin.

If you have never used the carrier oil on your skin before, you should do a skin patch test, using just the carrier oil first.
  1. Mix 1 drop of the essential oil you want to test with a teaspoon (5 ml) of carrier oil (Sweet Almond Oil and Grape Seed Oil are good choices).
  2. Apply a small amount of the mixture to the inside of your wrist or elbow crease. Leave uncovered for at least 24 hours.
  3. Don't wash this area during the test.
  4. Look for signs of itching, redness or swelling. If after 24 hours, there are none of these symptoms, it should be safe for you to use the oil.
If you are just getting started with essential oils, I recommend this Essential Oil- Beginners Set, It is reasonably priced and has a nice variety of oils for you to mix and match.
