Good wool yarns are great for sweaters, scarves, ski caps, even afghans. You can also use synthetic yarns for these. It can depend on how much you wish to spend for your yarn. If you want to be able to wash your wool item, you need to be sure that you are getting washable wool. You can usually get a lot of the information on the label.
I found out many long years ago that knitting takes much less yarn than crocheting does. You get a much different look from each craft, so it is up to you which one will work for you for your project.
The joy of knitting or crocheting is not just about the patterns and tools, or the craft itself - these are the love and enjoyment of doing this craft. The real joy can be using a wonderful yarn in a gorgeous color, and wearing your creation with pride in your accomplishment. You can make and wear beautiful clothes for a fraction of the cost to purchase them from the department store.
